GOAC Reading the Bible in A Year (Week 38) Proverbs 19-21; 2 Cor. 7

We continue in the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament and in 2nd Corinthians in the New Testament. Proverbs has provided words of wisdom for the reader and chapter 19 describes the path of the wise compared to the path of the foolish. Those who are wise have specific characteristics including integrity and continuous application of knowledge to life called wisdom. As I read this chapter, I looked closely at the introduction chapters that preceded it. My research also found the summary of Proverbs outlined in the Bible Project.https://youtu.be/AzmYV8GNAIMis The Hebrew word for wisdom resurfaced in my mind, khokhmah. It means actually skill as well as the applied knowledge of wisdom. So as I read chapters 19 through 21, I am reminded that the verses are providing the skills I need to navigate with wisdom in my walk with GOD. A specific skill to have is to welcome integrity in all aspects of my life through honest behavior and godly ways. I should choose to reverence the Lord by following his precepts. Now that does not guarantee that life will be without suffering because I walk with integrity but it does mean that I am living with a divine purpose in the fear of the Almighty creator who allowed me the choice.

While Proverbs is not promises to trust, when we read 2 Corinthians chapter 7 we are told of promises to those who stay in the will of the Spirit and not in the longing of the flesh. We are the temple of God like the physical temple of Israel. There are instructions to the church to understand suffering and sacrifice. Paul knew the cost of following Jesus but he also knew the joy of following Jesus. He sends comfort to those who were also experiencing the same state. The Corinthian church has repented and are now not suffering for sin but suffering for their walk with Christ.

I pray that as you read these scriptures you are grieved for any wrongdoing towards a state of repentance. I also pray that like the reader of Proverbs and 2 Corinthians 7, that you become joyful as you realize the promises of GOD for that repentance. Yes, there may be suffering but the obedience of the Lord brings hope.
